Bank of Ghana has moved to clear the air on how digital earnings are treated, confirming that payouts to Ghanaian content creators from global platforms including X are classified as service export proceeds.
This means creators can legally receive their earnings under existing foreign exchange regulations, either through Foreign Exchange Accounts (FEA) or directly into cedi accounts, as long as transactions follow regulatory requirements. The clarification addresses growing concerns among creators who have faced challenges accessing funds from international platforms.
The central bank also acknowledged these access issues, noting that such challenges should not occur when transactions are properly processed. It is currently engaging relevant institutions to investigate the root causes and ensure smoother payment flows going forward.
For Ghana’s creator economy, this is a critical signal: digital content is officially recognized as an export service. If properly implemented, it could unlock more confidence, formal participation, and growth in the country’s fast rising digital income ecosystem.
